“This book reminds us that economic growth, although essential, is insufficient on its own. Poverty does not result exclusively from deprivation, but just as much from these other threats, these other hardships that stand against its victims. Kofi Annan Illiteracy, insecurity, exclusion: poverty is the illustration of the worst in terms of human rights. For Irene Khan, it is necessary, possible - and urgent - to get poor people out of this vicious circle by offering them the possibility of empowerment. The author bears witness to his own struggles on the ground. Supported by figures and examples, she criticizes the solutions adopted by international organizations which do not sufficiently take into account the four combined factors which she considers fundamental if we want to eradicate poverty in the long term: the right to protection, respect for freedom of expression, basic needs and cultural identity. A clear and rigorous document which provides not only food for thought but above all action.
